About the Institute
The Tamilnadu Institute of Labour Studies TILS was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 29.03.1973. The institute has been expanding its activities and upgraded the institute as a First-Class Institute on 30.03.1978. The Institute has been functioning as an autonomous body with effect from 01.04.1988.
The main functions of the institute is to carry out research; to develop knowledge in the field of labour relevant to Indian conditions; to develop and lay down standards of proficiency in Human Resource Development/Management; to disseminate knowledge on Human Resource Management and Labour Welfare through seminars, conferences etc., to impart knowledge and skills to prospective and practicing managers, administrators and office bearers of Trade unions through teaching and training; to assist in the application of Human resource Management concepts and techniques through consultancy and extension services; to foster and assist in the development of the profession of Human resource Management and make it genuine instrument for economic development and social change and to organize training programs, seminars, workshop and symposium on weights and measures act for the benefit of the consumers and the inspectorate and to carry on surveys in that regard.

Government Recognition
The degrees awarded by this Institute (B.A. & M.A. Labour Management, PGDLA) are recognized by the Tamilnadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) as essential qualifications for the appointment of 'Assistant Commissioner of Labour' in the Labour Department.
Furthermore, these qualifications are recognized for the appointment of Labour Welfare Officers in Factories across Tamilnadu.
